Ice Hockey Training - How to Be the Best

How does a hockey player nowadays make the NHL (National Hockey League)? This is a very important question as hockey players are entering the NHL at such a young age in this 21st century. In other words, how does a hockey player rise above the rest? The answer is actually quite simple.

The better hockey player:

  • Learns faster
  • Trains smarter
  • Improves tremendously each year
  • Trains to improve as quick as he can
  • Is more competitive and wants to win more than anyone else
  • Loves the game and is willing to do what it takes to be great
  • Studies the best players in the world
  • Is exposed to proper training equipment
  • Is passionate about the game and continually wants to learn more

These are only some of the attributes of a great player. We can put these attributes into categories. One category could be the uncontrollable qualities. Being passionate, and loving the game are uncontrollable. Too bad that if you are not born with these feelings than you are not going to the NHL. However, if you are born with them, there are many things you can do to feed your “fire” and improve at a faster rate than the rest.

One thing you can do is work on the mental game. A great way to do this is to watch what the pros do. When I say watch, I mean study and analyze, rewind and watch in slow motion. Do what the pros do and have what the pros have.

Another way to improve faster than the rest is to use old and new training tools to tune up your skills. One of the best hockey training tools out there right now is the Tape-2-Tape. Tape-2-Tape allows you to work on your passing, stickhandling, and one-timers without needing a partner.

At http://www.hockeywithjon.com, Jon C. studies the pros and teaches his viewers for free. He interacts with his viewers and likes to work with aspiring hockey players or with people who just want to learn about the game.

You can also watch videos on how to properly use the Tape-2-Tape Hockey Training System to improve your one-timers from all angles or perhaps your backhand passing accuracy. You also have the option of purchasing a Tape-2-Tape.

The world of hockey has always been represented greatly by graduates of the Ontario Hockey League. The East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) is no exception to this. There are currently ten OHL alumni holding or sharing scoring records in the ECHL.

Jamey Hicks played in the OHL for five seasons from 1985-86 to 1989-90. Hicks split his time in the OHL between the Kitchener Rangers, Peterborough Petes and the Owen Sound Platers. Jamey holds the ECHL record for most shorthanded goals in a single game with three on January 27, 1998 with Birmingham.

Chanse Fitzpatrick played in the OHL for three seasons from 2001-02 to 2003-04. Fitzpatrick played for the Sarnia Sting and the Sudbury Wolves during his OHL career. Chanse holds the ECHL record for most powerplay goals in a single period with four on November 3, 2007 with Dayton. Those four powerplay goals ties him with three others for most powerplay goals in a single game.

Kevin Baker played three seasons in the OHL from 1997-98 to 1999-00, all with the Belleville Bulls. Baker is tied with one other player for the most powerplay goals in a single ECHL season with 27. This feat was accomplished in 2008-09 with the Florida Everblades when he netted a total of 57 goals.

Three Ontario Hockey League grads are tied with one other for the ECHL record for most consecutive three or more goals games with three. Steve Gibson played four seasons in the OHL from 1989-90 to 1992-93, all with the Windsor Spitfires. Gibson accomplished the feat in 1997 with Wheeling. Darryl Noren played just four games in the OHL in 1986-87 with the Kitchener Rangers. Noren had his three games in 1994 with Charlotte. Brian Martin had his three games in 1989 with Hampton Roads.

Brian Martin also holds the ECHL record for highest points per game average of a career with 1.85 between 1989 and 1994. Martin played five seasons in the OHL from 1982-83 to 1986-87. His career in the OHL was split between four teams: Guelph Platers, Belleville Bulls, Windsor Spitfires and Hamilton Steelhawks.

Tom Nemeth played four seasons in the OHL from 1988-89 to 1991-92, all with the Cornwall Royals. Nemeth holds two ECHL records and both are from the 1993-94 season with Dayton. Tom had the most assists in a single season by a defenseman (82) as well as the most points in a single season by a blueliner (98).

John Spoltore holds three career records in the ECHL. Spoltore played four seasons in the OHL from 1988-89 to 1991-92, all with the North Bay Centennials. John has the ECHL’s highest career assists per game average with 1.15 (tied with one other player), the most 100 or more point seasons with 4 and the most consecutive 100 or more point seasons with 3. Spoltore accomplished this between 1995 and 2001 with Louisiana.

Darren Colbourne played four seasons in the OHL from 1985-86 to 1988-89, split between the Oshawa Generals and the Cornwall Royals. Not only does Darren hold the ECHL record for most shots on goals in a single season with 443 with Dayton in 1991-92 but he is also in second place with 397 in 1993-94 with Richmond.

Kevin Kerr played four seasons in the OHL from 1983-84 to 1986-87. His OHL days were split between the North Bay Centennials and the Windsor Spitfires. Kevin holds the ECHL record for the fastest two goals. He scored two in just six seconds with Birmingham in a game on December 30, 1992.

Tom is the author of http://www.ohlalumnicentral.com/ (OHL Alumni Central). OHL Alumni Central is a daily updated blog featuring graduates of the Ontario Hockey League and their careers in professional hockey after leaving the OHL.

The centrepiece of ohlalumnicentral.com is the OHL Alumni Big List. The Big List is an on-going database of the whereabouts of all the active OHL grads.
