Genealogy & Gravestones - Why Was He Buried - There?

Posted by biohubieran on 18 сентября 2010

Gravestones and cemeteries are extremely interesting areas of research for your family tree.  There is much to discover from searching through a cemetery which contains several ancestors’ over time.  Sometimes families had all family members interred at one specific cemetery, and deceased individuals from other towns/states were transported to that cemetery for final burial.  However, you may find that one individual is buried many miles away from other family members, perhaps in a different state or country.  How interesting - I wonder why?   Good question, interesting clue.  Here are some tips to help you search on burial information of your ancestors.

Online:   Many gravestones and burials are online now and available to search, mainly for free:  FindAGrave is one example to search.  In addition, there are volunteers or members of local genealogy societies or of “Graveyard Rabbits” groups who have taken the time to go through cemeteries methodically, listing every stone and detail, often including a photo as well.

Start off by identifying the town or village your ancestor may have died in, and then identify a likely cemetery.  Remember that some families had gravesites on their property, particularly if they lived on a farm, or in a very sparsely populated area.  Histories of the area may give you more information on this possibility.

Search on a town website for the names of cemeteries in the area, or search at FindAGrave also.   Once you find a likely cemetery, begin searching using the surname, then search using first names.  Finally, go through the cemetery listings name by name.  It won’t take as long as you think it might, and the results are well worth the search.   For instance, you may well find married women with their maiden name listed as well - how helpful!   Also, the search function online for a cemetery may not pick up all your ancestors if their name is spelled slightly differently, or if only an initial is shown, or any number of reasons.  Therefore, search by surname, then search by first name, then go looking name by name by name.

Examine the year(s) in which your misplaced ancestor died.  Was there a war or skirmish on?  An epidemic?  Did a frontier area in the next county or state open up and everyone moved away except this one?  How can you find out this information?  Local newspapers, perhaps?  A lone interment (burial) can give you great clues to follow.  Multiple interments by one family could give you different clues.  For instance you may find that there were more James Terwilliger or Grover Buell burials than you knew, in one area.  Which one is ‘yours’?  How can you tell?  Think carefully about the kinds of details which will help you identify your ancestor.

Here’s another tip:  Look for first wives being buried in the same gravesite or area as subsequent wives;  it would be misleading to think they are children, but an easy error to make.  Search for the details of birth and death, and remember that some women died in childbirth in the 1800s, so a death within 4 months of a birth may be another clue.

After doing some searching and identifying a very likely grave, you can write to the cemetery office to request more information about your ancestor.  Remember that the staff may be quite busy and may need proof of your relationship in order to comply with your request.   Provide details of why you believe this is in fact your greatgrandfather, and ask if there is a fee for the service.   There may be nothing but the dates and names of the ancestors.   However, for example, my grandfather’s burial gave the cause of his death (massive heart attack), which I hadn’t known previously.

Look at newspapers in the area where your lone ancestor died:  there may be an article or mention of his death, such as an accident, illness, or the like.   Also look in the newspapers where his other relatives lived:  they may have picked up the information and provided it to local papers as well.  This is particularly true in the later 1880s and into the 1900s.   For example, details of the education as well as death of one of my greatgrandfather’s sons were printed in the Port Townsend WA newspaper as well as in the East Berlin News PA, and noting that he died in New York city, NY.  If I had only looked in the New York City newspapers I would have missed the rich details reported in the other papers.

While we would like to think that gravestone carvings are “accurate”, errors can creep into gravestones carvings, as well as irregular spellings.  Be prepared to think creatively as you search for gravestones.  Also, find an additional source to confirm the details on a stone, before you conclude this grave is definitely of your ancestor. Some sources might be newspaper obituaries, articles, city/county histories, church notices and records, and the like.

While you are online at a cemetery, check the information provided, and see if there is a possibility of a volunteer taking a photograph of the headstone in question.  You may find that the volunteer is a long-time resident of the area, and is quite knowledgeable about history, perhaps even has more details about your ancestor at the local museum or archives.  Unless you ask, you’ll never know.  For example, I requested a photo of the headstones of my greatgreatgrandparents in a CT cemetery where they were listed on FindAGrave.   In less than 3 hours, I had 3 wonderful photos, plus information on the house in the background, and details of exactly where in the cemetery these individuals are buried.  How exciting!

As more and more clues are found, use every bit of information, and ask yourself more questions.  Is there a symbol etched onto the gravestone?  What does it represent?  Find out!  Write to the local genealogy society and ask questions.  Perhaps someone living in the town has the exact information you are searching about your ancestor - and may actually be a cousin.  Enjoy your searches!

Unique Christmas Gifts For a Woman

Posted by biohubieran on 10 сентября 2010

Christmas is right around the corner, have you started thinking about what you will be buying for the women in your life? Your wife? Your mother? How about your sister? And Aunt? Or if you’re not married, a Christmas gift for your girlfriend would be most necessary. Are you having a hard time finding unique Christmas gifts for any of these woman? All you have to do is let your fingers do the walking right across your keyboard, and you will find a wealth of information when it comes to locating unique Christmas gifts for a woman.

If the woman you are thinking of purchasing a gift for likes chocolate, you could get her a personalized message on a nice piece of chocolate, possibly even have her favorite photo etched onto it. Wouldn’t that be a unique gift that she would probably never think to purchase for herself?

Maybe that special woman in your life is interested in learning a little bit about history; you could help her along with a gift that shows her exactly what was going on, on the day she was born. You could get her an authentic historic edition of a major newspaper from one of over fifty cities, dated for the day of her birth.

If the gift is for your mother, who is getting older, and may have failing eyesight, you could consider getting her a cell phone. I’m not thinking of just any cell phone, I’m talking about a Jitterbug cell phone. The jitterbug cell phone only has three very large buttons on it. One for just in case she needs to call 911 emergency services, another large button for her choice of numbers to be programmed in, and the last large button is for the operator. She can call the operator at any time, and the operator will look up the number she is trying to find, and will also connect for her. We all want for our mothers to feel safe and secure, and what better way to help her feeling safe, than to give her a cell phone that is so easy for her to use?

You may also consider getting the woman in your life a package deal for a “dinner of the month” club. Every woman will enjoy going out for dinner, and being wined and dined once a month. She will think of you each and every month and be reminded of how much you love her. And in fact, there are many different types of “Gifts of the Month;” there’s flowers, wine, cookies, chocolate, and many more. They’ll be perfect for the woman in your life.

What about really sounding like a big spender when you tell your woman that you’re giving them “real estate” for Christmas! OK, so it’s not real real estate but you can give them land in any or each of the 50 states. Get her a teeny piece of land in her favorite state with a legal Deed to a one square inch parcel of land to prove it. Or give her ownership to all 50 states on one Deed. They’re individually numbered and her name will be inscribed on it and it’s thoroughly legal. What could be a more unusual and unique Christmas gift for a woman than land?

Some excellent sites to check out for unique Christmas Gifts for a woman include http://www.veryclevergifts.com, and findgift.com.

Interesting Cape Town Street Names

Posted by biohubieran on 30 августа 2010

Cape Town’s street names reflect her ever-changing history with the who’s who of our colonial past and our democratic future being etched into our memory banks along with flora, fauna and some downright funny names also included on our colourful city’s map.

Afrikaans heritage makes for some funny street names

Cape Town’s identity as a truly cosmopolitan city has been ferociously backed up by her street tags and there are many Xhosa, Zulu, Afrikaans and English road names. Some funny Afrikaans translations include Banghoek (Scared corner) Street, Broeksman (Pantsman) Crescent, Dikkop (Thickhead) Way, Keel (Throat) Close (something one doesn’t want to happen too often), Katjiepieiring (Cat’s saucer) Road, Kennetjie (Little chin) Street, Skaamrosie (Shy Rose) Road, Langbeentjie (Long little legs) Close, Plakkies (Flip-flops) Street and Nieshout (Sneezewood) Street.

Fitting names for a social nation

Babblers Place and Chat Lane in Robinvale are only fitting street names for such a friendly, social nation, not to mention Peer Close (something the neighbours often do over fences in this area) and Tally Ho Road in Mitchells Plein.

In keeping with the neighbourly good-naturedness are Helpmekaar (Help each other) Street in Shirley Park, along with Krymekaar (Get each other) Street and Soekmekaar (Search for each other) Road in Macassar.

Also in line with the partying nature of our country’s people are streets like Fundance Street in Khayelitsha, Jig Road in Montague Gardens and, for the alternatives, Metallica Crescent in Groenvlei.

Worst vs. Best Street bodings

Listed among some of the street names one would want to avoid for their doom-and-gloom factor would be Moody Avenue in Epping , Defiant Street in Rocklands, Mahem Crescent in Robinvale and probably best steered clear of is Loco Road in Woodstock.

Street names that bring warm-fuzzy feelings and associations might include Kremetart Close in Loevenstein, Mallow Street in Hazendal and count me in for Present Street in Wellington!

Other streets that describe themselves in a positive manner (or rather boastfully in some cases) are Goodenough Avenue, Nice Road and Pleasant Place, all pipped by Perfecta and Matchless Roads.

Nouveau names

Fairyland just outside of Paarl has some really interesting and relatively nouveau street names, such as Burning Sky, Modern Art, Limelight & Rainbows End. In line with Burning Sky Street is Khayelitsha’s Shushu Crescent - shushu meaning ‘burning hot’.

The meaning of ‘Cranko’

But there are some names that are quite odd. Take Cranko Avenue, for instance. Is it a reference to the oddities that inhabit the space, the cranks of Tokai or does it mean something totally different? After further research, it turned out that the street was named after John Cyril Cranko, a leading ballet dancer and choreographer who died a most unlikely death, choking to death after suffering an allergic reaction to a sleeping pill he had taken on a transatlantic flight.

Gay rights entrenched

Cape Town is the celebrated city where gay rights have been firmly entrenched and this too has been reflected in the street monikers. Gay Lane, Street and Road in various areas all embrace our pink brothers and sisters and even though there is no mention of Straight Street, there are plenty of references to the Queens of the Cape. And while Wigtown Road and Mincing Lane also fit in nicely in Greenpoint, Homer Road does not refer to any sexual orientation but rather to the legendary Greek poet.

Refer to the ‘burn ‘n turn’ brigade

An ironic street name is that of Casino Street in Beacon Valley, one of the poorer areas of the city where up until 1994 gambling was strictly prohibited. Punt Street, in the same area, probably refers to the millions of punters who daily throw away armloads of cash in online betting operations. And although there is no direct reference to betting, there is a Bettington Square in the city itself.

One little floral lane that has raised a few eyebrows is that of Cannabis Walk, a plant with intoxicating effects. Celebs are also remembered in places like Strand where comic hero Charlie Brown has a street, along with Cinderella, Madonna and many other celebrities en masse in Celebes Walk in Mitchells Plain.

And just for their sheer cuteness factor, names like Ihobohobo Street in Khayelitsha and Tinktinkie Street in Somerset West come to mind.

Rwanda Gorilla Tours - A Once in a Lifetime Experience

Posted by biohubieran on 27 августа 2010

The Habitat of the Rwanda Gorillas

The dense jungle slopes of the Virunga volcanic mountains that lie on the north east border of Rwanda are home to the magnificent Rwanda gorilla. The area is famous for the opportunity to embark on Rwanda gorilla tours to view them in close proximity, but it certainly isn’t a glamorous feat to get to where these mighty apes live.

A Rwanda gorilla excursion entails trekking through the misty depths of the damp undergrowth of the rainforest. Whilst making your way past low slung branches covered in lichen and dense forest vegetation, you will come across some magical species of animals, insects and birds that thrive in this region. Soaking up your environment of the rugged terrain and all the inhabitants of the Virunga Mountains is all part of the adventure of Rwanda gorilla tours.

The Rwanda Gorilla Tour Experience

Once you have travelled through the jungle and come across a family of gorillas - you will understand why Diane Fossey dedicated 18 years of her life to protecting this incredible species. You will have time to observe the Rwanda gorillas as they go about their daily life by foraging for food, looking after their young as they jostle playfully and resting in their home environment.

When embarking on a gorilla tour, you will learn that there are strict protocols in place to ensure the safety and preservation of their species. The habituated Rwanda gorilla groups receive a maximum of 8 visitors per day. The trip through the forest can entail anything from a 1 hour to a 4 hour walk and you will always be accompanied by trackers who have years of experience and knowledge from living next to the forest and having spent much of their time with the gorillas.

Spending time in the company of these animals is a heart-warming and magical experience and it’s a true privilege to be in such close proximity of these distant relatives of ours. A Rwanda gorilla tour will stay etched into your memory bank forever.

Interesting Facts about Rwanda Gorillas

In Uganda and Rwanda, the gorillas have adapted specifically to their living environment. Before you embark on a Rwanda gorilla tour, be sure to do a bit of research into their species so that you enhance your experience by possessing knowledge prior to coming into contact with them.

o In both Rwanda and Uganda, gorillas can be identified by their nose prints, which are unique to each individual.

o The adult male Rwanda gorillas have more pronounced bony crests on their skulls, giving them a more conical shape in comparison to the females.

o Adult male gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda are referred to as “silverbacks”, this is because of a saddle of grey or silver-coloured hair that develops on their backs as they age.

o Rwanda and Uganda gorillas that live in the Virunga Mountains have longer and darker hair than other gorilla species. This allows them to live in hot or cold weather, even in areas where the temperature drops below 0 (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

o Mountain gorillas are diurnal and active during the hours between 6am and 6pm.

o Every evening, the mountain gorillas build a new nest to sleep in for the night using surrounding vegetation.

Tips For Your Rwanda Gorilla Tour

Remember that when you enter the mountain gorillas’ terrain, you need to show the utmost respect for their habitat. This means that you will have to keep in mind to preserve the environment and leave it just as you found it. Littering is strictly prohibited, along with spitting (which can cause contamination and introduce disease).

When you come across the gentle mountain gorillas, your guide will remind you to keep your voices low and cough with your hand over your mouth, turned away from the gorillas. You should also avoid rapid movements that may frighten or disturb them and at all times, follow your guide’s directions. Your viewing time is limited to 1 hour, so make sure you make the most of it by taking time to observe and pay respect to these gentle giants as they go about their daily business.
