The 21 Storylines Even The Most Cynical Media Will Love (part three)

Posted by biohubieran on 18 сентября 2010

What storylines do you use to hook the media to build your business and brand?

If your engagement with the media were a boat, what boat would you use to float your ideas?

Stories help build brands. Especially in a low trust world, so your stories must be both authentic and engaging.

Most brands don’t rely on just one storyline. They use several depending on the audience they are trying to reach.

Here are the third (and final) seven of what I call The 21 Storylines Even The Most Cynical Media Will Love:

15. The Pure Archetype

“An archetype is a generic, idealized model of a person, object or concept from which similar instances are derived, copied, patterned or emulated. In psychology, an archetype is a model of a person, personality or behavior.” (Source Wikipedia)

A selection of common archetypes from Wikipedia include:

“Superman (the Omnipotent) e.g. The Joker, Iago, Superman himself

The Hero, e.g. Siegfried, Batman, Beowulf, Doc Savage, Luke Skywalker and The Matrix’s Neo.

The Great Mother, either good or terrible, e.g. Devi (MahaDevi), the Great Goddess, Glinda the Good Witch of the North

The Wise Old Man, e.g. Merlin, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Gandalf, Albus Dumbledore, Mazer Rackham and Mr. Miyagi

The Trickster or Ape, e.g. Reynard, Robin Goodfellow, Br’er Rabbit, Bart Simpson, Bugs Bunny, Ferris Bueller, and Loki

The Puer Aeternus (Latin for “eternal boy”), e.g. Peter Pan.”

The media love to attach archetypes to people and present them to audiences in a certain way that matches these archetypes.

From Terminator to Conan The Barbarian to champion bodybuilder, Arnold Schwarzenegger has always been the warrior archetype.

16. Revenge

Revenge is a strong motivator. The media love the inherent conflict in the revenge story. Sir Richard Branson of Virgin fame is my favourite revenge case study.

He took on the record companies, airlines, banks and now superannuation and fuel companies and won.

17. Needs To Prove Something

Proving you are up to a challenge is another strong motivator. Again the media love the inherent conflict in this story angle. Anita Roddick of the Body Shop fame is my favourite case study.

18. Risks All

Risking everything is full of conflict as futures sit on a knife edge. The gambler in all of us appeals to the human side of the media and audiences.

Everyone can relate to risk. Rupert Murdoch, Donald Trump are two stand outs in terms of risking all for a goal and winning.

19. Pawn In A Game

Was Tom Cruise pushed or has he really lost his movie star appeal after getting sacked by movie studio Paramount? Who knows? He is just a pawn in the movie making game and his future is controlled by others.

The media love it when someone’s fate is controlled by others. The Bali Nine drug couriers are another Australian example.

20. Outrageous Behaviour

Paris Hilton sets the benchmark in this category.

21. Tumbling From The Top

Martha Stewart, Michael Jackson, and Enron are US standouts. Henry Kay, AWB Limited, HIH and One Tel are classic case studies in Australia of how the media loves this storyline.

Note it is a negative one and best avoided.

I hope you have enjoyed the 21 storylines and can find several that match your marketing and communication goals.

NFC East 2007 Previews and Projections

Posted by biohubieran on 16 сентября 2010

1) Dallas: Bill Parcells nay-sayers can say what they want now that the “Big Tuna” has once again galloped off into retirement, but the simple truth of the matter is that the Cowpokes are a much better team now than they were when Parcells took the reins following the 2002 season. In the Tuna’s four year stint at the helm he guided the Boyzzz to a winning combined regular season mark of 34-30 and made the playoffs twice, yes the Boyzzz lost both playoff games under Parcells, but don’t lose sight of the fact that this is a team that had posted an overall mark of 15-33 in the three seasons prior to his arrival and had not made the playoffs since 1999!

Team owner Jerry Jones has brought in Wade Philips, who has the Chargers defensive coordinator, to replace Parcells who left the Dallas cupboards fully stocked with talent, like Norv Turner who now has the keys to the blue Ferrari that is the San Diego Chargers, Philips now has the keys to a beautiful silver Lamborghini that calls Texas Stadium home. The Dallas offense is basically the same unit that finished last year ranked 5th in the league and started in last year’s fluky 20-21 playoff loss against Seattle, there are three exceptions however, former Super Bowl winning QB Brad Johnson was brought in to mentor/backup starting QB Tony Romo, Leonard Davis was signed away from Arizona to man the right guard position and former Dallas backup QB Jason Garrett will be the man calling the offensive plays.

Defensively the Cowpokes need to improve on last years 13th ranked unit that allowed a mind boggling 419 yards per game on average to their final five opponents, to facilitate this they drafted Anthony Spencer out of Purdue with their first round selection and signed hard hitting former Seattle safety Ken Hamlin. Dallas really only has one other weakness and that is with their kicking game, year in and year out Dallas always seems to need a reliable kicker and this year is no different. The Pokes thought they had solved that problem last year with the signing of former Colt kicker Mike Vanderjagt but as it turned out Peyton Manning was correct with regard to Vanderjagt being an “idiot kicker” that couldn’t take pressure. Vanderjagt was cut after 11 games last season and Martin Gramatica was siged as his replacement, Dallas is serious about fixing this problem and showed this fact by drafting Nick Folk out of Arizona in the 6th round to compete with and hopefully replace Gramatica. Projected record: 11-5

**Look to play AGAINST these Cowpokes in their first road game of the season when they travel to Miami on 9/16/07 to face a Dolphin team that will probably be installed as a home doggie or a very small favorite, that suits us just fine because there is plenty of talent and pride on this Dolphin team to play well in their home opener and Dallas will be coming to town in possible “let-down” mode having just played their season opener at home against their divisional rival G-men and have a date on deck against the Bears who were the NFC’s Super Bowl representative last year, can you say “sandwich game”?

2) Philadelphia: These Birds won the NFC Eastern division last year with a mark of 10-6 which gives Philly five divisional titles in the past six seasons, however, it was NOT star QB Donovan McNabb who led the Birds down the stretch to a 5-1 straight up mark (4-2 ATS), won the divisional crown, or won their initial playoff game against the G-Men, it was ousted backup QB Jeff Garcia who is now with Tampa Bay. McNabb has now had season ending injuries three of the past five years which prompted HC Andy Reid to draft former Houston Cougar QB Kevin Kolb in the second round and sign A.J Feeley to a three year contract extension.

Kevin Kolb will need a couple of years to mature and grow in Andy Reid’s offense but should be a perfect match and the Eagles future with regard to starting 50 straight games and playing every down of his college career in a spread offense predicated on a quick, short, passing game. Versatile RB Brian Westbrook who had over 1200 rushing yards last year along with a total of 77 catches and 11 TD’s, should continue to be the Birds spear head, to spell Westbrook the Eagles drafted Tony Hunt out of Penn State in the 3rd round. In a surprising move the Birds let WR Donte’ Stallworth walk away and sign with New England and as a replacement brought in former Ram Kevin Curtis.

Defensively, Philly ranked 15th in the league overall last year but had a rush stopping unit that allowed 141 yards per game and ranked a shoddy 28th in terms of yards allowed, to fix this leak the Birds upgraded their line backing corps by trading with Buffalo for Takeo Spikes and drafting Stewart Bradley out of Nebraska, the Eagles will also have Chris Gocong back from injury who was drafted as a LB in 2006. To aid the defensive line the Birds brought in Montae Reagor from the Colts and signed Ian Scott away from the Bears, they will also have the services of the “Freak” Jevon Kearse who will be returning to the lineup from a injury shortened season.

The Birds have been the cream of the crop within this division, however, they are an aging group that has an injury prone QB leading them into battle, the combination of having a fairly easy schedule to navigate with regard to their only tough non division road games taking place at New England and at New Orleans, along with getting to face Chicago and Seattle in Philly-land and being in a division that has two teams (G-Men and Washington) in disarray, should have the Eagles competing once again for another divisional crown against the much more talented Cowboys. Projected record: 10-6

** Look to play ON the Eagles on September 30th when they visit the Giants, the chinks in the G-Men’s armor probably will not have shown themselves as of yet while the Eagles will have started to gel entering this 4th game of the new season, the Birds were +5.5 and +7 point doggies in their past two visits to the Meadowlands and at this early stage of the season will in all likelihood be installed as doggies again which suits us just fine because a peek at the past history of these teams reveals that Philly has won outright and covered the posted spread in three of their past four visits to New Jersey.

3) Washington: The Redskins posted a shoddy mark of 5-11 last season, however, a closer look-see reveals that HC Joe Gibbs and company had five games decided by 3 points or less, in those five games they did not fare so well with regard to posting a mark of 1-4 straight up and 1-3-1 ATS, oddly enough 4 of those 5 nail-biters took place on the Skins home grass! A simple truth is that Washington needs to learn how to win in crunch time, if the Skins had won all five of those close affairs they would have finished the season with a record of 9-7 and quite possibly would have made the playoffs as well.

The Skins were not really all that terrible on offense with regard to finishing the season ranked 13th, what did them in was their 30th ranked defensive unit that in truth was injury depleted and especially across the front which led to Wash allowing opponents to run for 137.4 yards per game and only sacking the other teams QB 20 times all season long, which by the way was the worst QB take down tally of any team in the NFL! To correct this situation the Redskins signed LB London Fletcher-Baker away from Buffalo, signed Fred Smoot off the Vikings roster, and snagged safety LaRon Landry out of LSU via the draft who was probably the best safety in college football last year.

In the end it will all come down to how well QB Jason Campbell runs the offense and how well be protects the ball and avoids turnovers, Campbell started the final two games of last season and posted a combined total of 59 points in those outings, in time he should flourish under offensive guru Al Saunders but the Skins have got to realize that this young man can not carry the load all by himself. In the big picture if the Skins want to compete in this division with the likes of Dallas and Philadelphia they have got to get their running game going with RB Clinton Portis who is returning from a shoulder injury and reliable backup Ladell Betts, and they have to shore up that leaky defense. Projected record: 9-7

**Look to play AGAINST these Redskins when they visit Philadelphia on September 17th to participate in a Monday Night Game, the Eagles have defeated the visiting Skins four of the past five years in straight up fashion when the game was held in the City of Brotherly Love and this year should be no different for Washington with young QB Jason Campbell under center playing his first road game of the new season. Needless to say the home town Birds will be installed as the betting favorites in this affair and that’s nice to know because according to the ole history book the favorite has covered the posted spread 6 of the past 7 times these two teams have met.

4) NY Giants: The G-Men are very similar to divisional rival Washington in more ways than one with regard to both teams having head coaches on the proverbial “hot seat”, both teams possessing middle of the road offenses, and both teams needing to show marked improvement with their defensive units if they want to compete, the only saving grace for each club is the fact that each has a not-so-hard non divisional schedule to navigate. Last season the G-Men staggered to a 2-6 straight up mark to close out the regular season but in head shaking fashion somehow someway managed to make the wildcard round of the playoffs with an 8-8 record only to lose to the Eagles on a last second FG.

The Giants allowed 26 QB take downs last year for an average of 1.53 sacks allowed per game which was the 6th best tally in the league, however, that number figures to rise this year for two reasons, first of all RB Tiki Barber has retired and in his place steps 6 foot 4 264 pound RB Brandon Jacobs who has been on the G-Men’s roster for the past few seasons. Jacobs should do a decent job but he simply does not have the all round versatility of Barber to keep opposing defenses honest which of course is needed to make the play action game work and keep the QB upright. Secondly, the Giants released LT’s Luke Petitgout and Bob Whitfield, to replace Petitgout as the starter the G-Men have moved LG David Diehl over and will use Rich Seubert as the LG, off the bench the Giants will use Guy Whimper to back up both positions. If this unit does not gel, or they experience a cluster of injuries, then QB Eli Manning can expect to be on his backside more often than not.

Defensively, the G-Men have taken a hard line stance with all star Michael Strahan who is still holding out and is being fined to the tune of $14000 per day, the thought process here is that he will indeed return to the team. To help the Giants ailing 25th ranked defense LB Kawika Mitchell was signed away from the Chiefs, DT Marcus Bell was signed away from Detroit and former Texas Longhorn CB Aaron Ross was drafted in the first round. In the big picture the G-men simply have way too many question marks on their roster to expect anything other than another mediocre season and if that’s the case we may very well see Bill Cowher or Marty Schottenheimer replace Tom Coughlin at the man in charge. Projected record: 8-8

**Look to play AGAINST these G-Men on September 30th when they host the visiting Eagles, the chinks in the G-Men’s armor probably will not have shown themselves as of yet while the Eagles will have started to gel entering this 4th game of the new season, the Birds were +5.5 and +7 point doggies in their past two visits to the Meadowlands and at this early stage of the season will in all likelihood be installed as doggies again which suits us just fine because a peek at the past history of these teams reveals that Philly has won outright and covered the posted spread in three of their past four visits to New Jersey.

Jim Campbell runs http://www.FootballForecastor.com which has been an internet based sports handicapping service since 1997, you will be hard pressed to find another handicapper that has had the kind of success Jim has had, over the past eight years he has maintained one of the very best winning percentages of any sports handicapping service.

Jim Campbell finished the final four weeks of the 2005 NFL regular season with a mark of 14-5-2 ATS coming down the stretch for a winning rate of 73.68% and for the season in the NFL he finished with an overall mark of 48-33-4 ATS for a winning rate of 59.26% and that includes a perfect mark of 7-0 ATS in the NFL Playoffs, Jim has posted a mark of 6-2 ATS over the past EIGHT years with his Super Bowl selection.

How to Be a Funny Person!

Posted by biohubieran on 14 сентября 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

It’s not unusual to want to be a funny person. I think everyone wants the attention you can get from it. Not to mention the reputation of being the “funny friend” I think you know what I’m talking about lol. One thing you should always keep in mind is to keep things light! Don’t let yourself think too much about what you want to say, or how you want to say it. Let the opportunities present itself and then expound on them in a humorous way.

Example could be lightly making fun of other friends in the group (make sure the friend you’re making fun of already likes you first, haha) you and some friends are at a restaurant and brad accidentally spilled his drink on himself. While everyone is laughing at the situation you could make it even funnier by keeping a straight face, looking brad in the eye and waiting for the laughter to calm down. Then say something like,

“your mom tried to warn me that I might want to bring a sippy cup for you…I did not listen..”

Other ways to be funny could include your body language and facial expressions. Don’t be a statue or monotone when you are talking. Be expressive, be a little outgoing. Don’t try to shove your business at everyone, instead let them notice that you are funny. Don’t try to convince them you can make them laugh, let them decide for themselves that hey This guy is funny! or, When did you become so funny?

Another thing to consider is making sure you’re not taking yourself seriously at all. If you’re going to be funny, you’re going to have to learn to laugh and make fun of yourself. This is a great method of inviting people to your sense of humor.

Speaking of sense of humor, you should really spend time by yourself and figure out what kind of sense of humor you really have. Is it an eccentric one? (Think Dane Cook) Maybe it’s a witty, quick and smart one. (think Jon Stewart) What about an overly angry sense of humor (think Lewis Black) maybe you like to play on puns or slapstick. Maybe you like to play on meaningful insights and thoughts (kind of like a smart sense of humor) Watch a LOT of different stand up comics to get a feel for what you think is funniest.

Do You Know Who Todd McFarlane Is?

Posted by biohubieran on 12 сентября 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Born in Calgary, Alberta in Canada on March 16, 1961 Todd McFarlane has had a meteoritic rise to fame and fortune, all thanks to a comic book character.

McFarlane has been in the news a lot recently with several new ventures ranging from a new take on the Wizard of Oz classic, to the latest Microsoft MMO game Halo 3 and his new Studios 38 venture with ……… and ………. That has the gaming industry buzzing with speculation.

But who is he?

He spent his early childhood in Southern Californian but returned to Calgary at the age of 14.

During his high school years, like many teenage boys, he ejoyed reading comic books and bought as many as he could afford. A few of his favourite artists were John Byrne, George Perez, Marshall Rogers, Michael Golden, Art Adams and Walter Simonson.

Although he was a keen artist and spent a lot of his time reading and drawing comic book heroes his ultimate dream was to be a professional baseball player.

McFarlane’s passion for baseball continued through his high school and college years and he was awarded a baseball scholarship to Eastern University.

Despite the scholarship and in order to finance his education he worked as a janitor in a comic book shop. He was also recruited by a local Seattle Mariners scout to play on a semi-professional summer team at Kamloops, British Columbia. Here was here that he met and became inseperable friends with Al Simmons.

Unable to find any Major League teams willing to sign him or offer him a position when his baseball college eligibility expired he continued drawing comic book characters.

Determined to find work Todd began submitting his artwork to comic book editors across the USA and Canada and as a result amassed a collection of more than 700 rejection letters.

But still determined, and not one to give up Todd continued to submit his artwork until eventually he accepted an offer from Marvel/Epic comics in March of 1984 to pencil “Scorpio Rose” which was an 11 page back up story in the Coyote comic.

In July 1985 he married his high school sweetheart Wanda and they moved to Washington where Wanda completed a biology degree. The young couple then moved to a suburb of Vancouver in Canada.

Todd continued working with Marvel comics and also accepted some assignments from DC Comics including penciling several issues of The Incredible Hulk, the Batman title Detective as well as two issues of Batman: Year Two.

Todd McFarlanes dedication, hardwork, unique style and meticulous attention to detail and quality saw him rise to the top of Marvel’s artist roster.

His big break came with his pencils and covers for Amazing Spiderman that helped to take the title from its’ previous number 9 spot to number 1.

McFarlane enhanced Amazing Spidermanman with his unique style by transposing the characters body to spidery positions, adding spider looking eyes, and popularizing a new way of rendering webs.

As a result of his success on this title Marvel eventually gave McFarlane his own title he could solely write, pencil and ink, Spider-Man.

Spider-Man issue 1 shipped in September 1990 and became the biggest selling comic of all time with more than 2.5 million copies.

In 1991, when his first daughter was born, he took a six month hiatus to help care for her and frustrated with the mainstream publishing companies he began to make plans to form his own publishing company.

A few months later he and his family moved to Portlan in Oregon. Meanwhile he continued his plans to create a publishing company that would allow artists more creative freedom and control over their own creations. After speaking to several over prominent artists at Marvel he learned that many of them felt the same way.

After months of discussions and planning seven of Marvels hottest and most prominent artist announced their departure. These seven artists included Todd, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Jim Valentino, Erik Larsen, Marc Silvestri and Whilce Portacio and the group formed Comic Images, the parent company and publisher for each individuals own comic book company.

This meant that although they published together under the parent companies name each retained the control of their own characters including all licensing and merchandising rights.

It was only with the creation of Comic Images that Todd felt that he could finally publish his comic which he had created nearly 10 years before.

And so Spawn was born.

The first issue of Spawn, shipped in May 1992, sold 1.7 million copies making it the best selling independent comic to date Spawn has continued its’ success and still remains to be a top selling title in both the US and around the world. Spawn is now sold in 35 countries and is translated into 10 different languages.

As well as the main core Spawn comic book several other spin off titles have evolved from it including Sam, Twitch and Hellspawn.

With the characters continued success Todd began to draw the attention of several potential licensees including toy companies, movie studios and television producers.

Keen on the idea of seeing his character take form as a toy or figure McFarlane began to approach several toy companies with his proposals only to be disappointed by their unwillingness to grant him any control over the process.

As a result he decide to form McFarlane Toys in order to guarantee his fans a quality product that he personally had approved. With their intricate detail and excellent articulation Spawn action figures have become some of the most sought after toys on the market.

In 1997, after being perused by all the major studios, McFarlane signed with New Line Cinema to make a Spawn movie. Spawn the Movie opened in August 1997 and grossed $37 million in its first ten days and $50 million in its first 19 days.

In the same year HBO showed the first six half hour episodes of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn, an animated series based on the comic book character. Another six original episodes was debuted in May 1998 with a third series of six shown in May 1999, with plans for a fourth series currently being discussed.

Season one was released on video in August 1997 and became HBO Home Video’s top selling original programming video of all time. McFarlane was rewarded with an Emmy award for the animated series and a Gold DiVi award for the Spawn motion picture DVD.

Not content with his comic book and budding toy and film empire in 1998 he bought a minority ownership in the Edmonton Oilers NHL hockey team and in 2001 he co-designed their third jersey which became the biggest selling third jersey in NHL history.

Todd has also turned his creativeness to music and has helped in the making of award winning videos for such groups as Korn and Pearl Jam. His animated video made with Eddie Vedder based on the Pearl Jam song Do the Evolution has won 40 International artistic awards and was nominated for “Best Short Form Music Video” in the 1999 Grammy Awards. He also produced the Freak on a Leash video for Korn which won a Grammy and two MTV awards.

In 1998 Todd McFarlane took his love for baseball to a new level when he purchased the Mark McGwire 70th home run baseball for a record $3 million. Not content with that he managed to collect another nine McGwire-Sammy Sosa home run balls from that seasons home run race.

Collectively known as The McFarlane Collection it has toured stadiums and special events across the country to raise money for charity and to date more than 2 million fans have seen the exhibit.

The late 1990’s saw McFarlane Toys evolve from an independent toy company to make quality toys based on the Spawn character and related characters into one of the worlds biggest and most highly regarded toy manufacturers. In fact McFarlanes have become the benchmark by which many other companies and toys are judged so high is their reputation, quality, detail and value.

This reputation for a quality and highly detailed product at a reasonable and affordable price has resulted in McFarlane Toys producing figures in all genres of film, music, gaming and sports.

By 2002 McFarlane had secured licenses for all four of the US Major League sports which realized a long dream of Todd’s.

Spawn and its related characters still remain the core business of McFarlane’s with series 32 to be produced in Dec, 2007 based on the The Adventures of Spawn which is a new take on the Spawn mythos based on a more “anime” style look.

McFarlane also continues to work on films with several projects in the works including a new Spawn movie, a new Land of Oz movie and a deal signed with Universal Pictures for a collaboration with horror icon Clive Barker based on the Clive Barker’s Tortured Souls line of figures which were a huge success for McFarlane’s Toys.

McFarlane, his wife Wanda and their three children still live in Arizona were he still maintains a happy, if often chaotic, balance between famil life and business.

Todd credits his success to a little talent, being in the right place at the right time, a lot of hard work, determination and perseverance.

To sum up Todd says:

“My ability to deliver a good product is my strength, I’d like to be remembered as a guy who turned out some quality comics and toys, while doing a few different things even if it wasn’t the easiest road to follow.”

Colin Dorman

The Perfect Golf Gift

Posted by biohubieran on 12 сентября 2010

A few years ago a friend of mine presented me with a gift. It was a plaque featuring Payne Stewart. For those of you who don’t know about Payne, he was a very likable golf pro who died in a tragic plane crash in 1999. This plaque shows a picture of Payne holding his 1999 US Open trophy and a bag piper walking off into the mist. It also has engraved tutorials about his accomplishments and a duplicate of the wrist band he wore with the initials WWJD (What Would Jesus Do)

This plaque is one of my most cherished possessions. It will always hang prominently in my office. I probably get more compliments on that plaque then any other memorabilia in my office or home.

Recently I wanted to buy a similar plaque for a good golfing buddy (Terry). I called Al (the guy who gave me my plaque) and asked where to find them. Al said he bought it at a charity auction and had no idea where I would get one or what they cost.

As golfers, we are tired of getting the same old boring gifts, golf balls, ball markers, towels and hats. I really needed to find those plaques.

A friend of mine suggested e-bay. I went to the e-bay site and I did find some golf plaques. The selection was limited and the quality was nowhere near as good as the one I owned. Terry had admired my plaque for years and I didn’t want to give him something of inferior quality.

After a few days of surfing the web, I found a site called Golfinghound.com. Their selection of memorabilia golf items was huge. I found multiple plaques for every golfer from Bobby Jones to Tiger Woods. Some of these plaques are autographed and their prices were very reasonable.

If you want to buy a gift for the golfers in your life, this is it! Not only will they remember you forever, but these gifts will become family heirlooms and increase in value.

Top 10 Doris Day Movies

Posted by biohubieran on 1 сентября 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1922, Doris Day aspired to be a professional dancer but a car accident forced her to reassess her career as she spent part of her teenage years in a wheel chair recovering. Taking to singing on radio instead it wasn’t until 1948 that Doris made her first movie as Miss Georgia Garrett in “It’s Magic” (originally known as “Romance on the High Seas”). And so her movie career began which would span 20 years and 39 movies before she left the big screen and went to the small screen with her TV show “The Doris Day Show” which ran from 1968 - 1973.

Often regarded as the “eternal virgin” thanks mainly to a series of movies where the subject of sex was taboo, Day was in fact a very accomplished actress capable of delivering comedy, romance as well as heavy drama and of course was able to sing and dance as well. A seriously well rounded star who was top box-office star for 1963 and is often regarded as the ‘all-time’ top female box office star.

During her career she starred opposite some of Hollywood’s major stars such as Gordon MacRae, David Niven, Clark Gable, Kirk Douglas, James Stewart, Gig Young, Howard Keel, James Garner, Jack Lemmon and of course Rock Husdon whose trio of movies that they made together are some of her most popular.

Whilst it’s fair to say that some of Doris Day’s movies were remarkably similar with a recurring theme of being either a career minded young woman or duped by a man they worked well and made for some marvelous movies made memorable usually by at least one musical scene showcasing Day’s wonderful singing voice.

From out of her 39 movies it is actually quite difficult to narrow it down to just 10 but here is my personal choice for the “Top 10 Doris Day Movies”.

#10 Teacher’s Pet (1958)

The first movie to see what would become a very familiar storyline as Doris Day plays a career minded woman duped by a man pretending to be someone else. Here we watch Doris Day play Erica Stone a lecturer in journalism who ends up being duped by James Gannon (Clark Gable) a bit city newspaper editor who initially wants to give Stone a piece of his mind but ends up falling for her. The trouble is he pretends to be someone else when they meet and you know it will cause problem when his true identity is revealed.

Although “Teacher’s Pet” would be the first of these romantic-comedies which featured very similar storylines it was noticeable for the fact that Doris Day played things straight, whilst still delivering that charming and lovable performance which would fill many of these romantic comedies. Instead we had Clark Gable delivering the comedy as James Gannon with a wonderful array of face pulling with makes “Teacher’s Pet” a hugely enjoyable movie.

#9 Young Man With a Horn (1950)

In all fairness “Young Man With a Horn” or “Young Man of Music” as it is also known is not really a Doris Day movie rather than a Kirk Douglas movie with Doris Day in a supporting role. But the story of Rick Martin (Kirk Douglas) who learns to play the trumpet from legendary musician Art Hazzard and goes on to become a troubled star musician is a brilliant movie full of drama, emotion and music as well as a little comedy.

It is a brilliant performance from Kirk Douglas in the lead role but Doris Day is equally as good even in the lesser role of songstress Jo Jordan who ends up becoming a close friend to Rick. Although she only gets to sing 4 songs in the movie each one is beautiful done and in between each of these songs Day shows what a talented actress she is, so natural in every scene.

#8 It Happened to Jane (1959)

In the same year that Doris Day would make her first movie with Rock Hudson she also made another romantic comedy, this time with Jack Lemmon and Ernie Kovacs. In “It Happened to Jane” Doris plays Jane Osgood a career minded mother who breeds and sells lobsters who finds herself taking on the might of Harry Foster Malone (Ernie Kovacs) the owner of a train line which cost her a lot of money in dead lobsters. With the help of her best friend, lawyer George Denham (Jack Lemmon) she battles Malone in anyway she can but despite her troubles things may turn out alright in more sense than one.

With the exception of “Teacher’s Pet” prior to “It Happened to Jane” the majority of Doris Day’s romantic movies had largely been largely musicals. But here we had Day showing her ability in a more straight forward romantic comedy with barely a musical scene in sight, except for one heavily manufactured one featuring “Be Prepared”. What makes this movie feature in my “Top 10 Doris Day Movies” is the combination of Doris Day and Jack Lemmon who between them light up the screen with a perfect amount of comedy.

#7 The Thrill of It All (1963)

“The Thrill of It All” would be the first of Doris Day and James Garner’s 2 movies together and see once more Doris Day taking on a familiar role of a house wife and mother. During a dinner party Beverly Boyer (Doris Day), wife of obstetrician Gerald (James Garner), regales the hosts with a tale about how she used ‘Happy Soap’ to wash her children’s hair, as it happens her hosts are the owners of ‘Happy Soap’. Before she knows it Beverly is the new face of ‘Happy Soap’ making adverts, appearing on bill boards and being wined and dined at big socials. All of which ends up annoying Gerald who barely sees his wife causing a rift in their happy marriage.

Although their second movie together, “Move Over, Darling” would end up a bigger box-office success I prefer “The Thrill of It All” out of Doris Day and James Garner’s 2 movies together. It’s for the most rather routine with Doris Day playing that beautiful and slightly kooky house wife to James Garner’s tall dark and handsome husband but it’s full of memorable, funny scenes. The fake posing for the billboard and the swimming pool full of suds are two of just many innocently amusing moments in a movie full of them.

#6 On Moonlight Bay (1951)

In her 20 year movie career and despite making several movies which used the same sort of storyline Doris Day only made one sequel which was “By the Light of the Silvery Moon”. The predecessor to it was the beautifully titled “On Moonlight Bay” which saw Day take on the role of Marjie Winfield a tomboy who falls for Bill Sherman (Gordon MacRae). The trouble is that Bill has some unorthodox views on relationships and marriage and also on a few other things which end up annoying Marjie’s father George.

Although “On Moonlight Bay” has a storyline, in fact it has a few storylines it is very much a musical with numerous musical moments featuring either the wonderful Doris Day or the equally wonderful Gordon MacRae and often together. But it is the way everything comes together to make a thoroughly pleasant and charming movie, completely innocent and a lot of fun.

#5 The Pajama Game (1957)

This would be the last of Doris Day’s movies which were firstly musical and drama second but it is surprisingly good fun. Set in the Sleeptite Pajama Factory Doris plays Babe Williams a union rep who finds herself coming up against new superintendent Sid Sorokin (John Raitt) who falls head over heels for her, except business and pleasure start to make things rather messy especially as Babe’s fellow workers want a rise.

“The Pajama Game” has it roots as a Broadway musical and what makes the screen version work is that it feels like you are watching a stage musical. With many of the Broadway cast reprising their roles for the movie and with a vibrant styling which really brings it to life it is a very entertaining movie. And of course it features Doris Day at her feisty best as she plays up against John Raitt whilst delivering plenty of cheerful musical numbers.

#4 Love Me or Leave Me (1955)

During her career Doris Day performed in a few movies which were based or inspired by real people, in “Love Me or Leave Me” she stars as Ruth Etting in a fictionalized account of the jazz singer’s life. Having been spotted by Chicago hood Marty Snyder (James Cagney) Ruth goes from a wannabee singer to a major star, but with Snyder controlling her life the public image Ruth presented was vastly different to her unhappy private one.

What makes Doris Day’s performance in “Love Me or Leave Me” so brilliant comes in hindsight of information that Doris Day revealed in her autobiography. Day herself suffered an unhappy marriage to Martin Melcher who basically controlled her life and much of which almost mirrors what you watch in “Love Me or Leave Me”. As such there is a real sense of pain and emotion in many of the scenes in the movie where Snyder inflicts his rage and control over Ruth. Plus of course being a movie about a singer means we get plenty of brilliant musical moments including renditions of “Ten Cents a Dance” and “I’ll Never Stop Loving You”.

#3 By the Light of the Silvery Moon (1953)

As already mentioned “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” is the equally beautifully titled sequel to “On Moonlight Bay” and follows a very similar storyline with Marjie Winfield still having relationship issues with Bill who having agreed to marry her before heading off to war returns not quite ready to walk down the aisle. And that’s not the only problem as other member’s of the Winfield household are having a few issues.

To many “By the Light of the Silvery Moon” is inferior to “on Moonlight Bay” and basically just rehashes the whole storyline, which in all fairness it does. But to me it has a lot more charm especially with the wintry setting and memorable ending on the frozen pond with a wonderful family sing-a-long. It also helps that Day is at her cutest best as Marjie easy on the eyes and easy to fall in love with.

#2 Pillow Talk (1959)

It may come as a surprise to some but Doris Day and Rock Hudson only made 3 movie together, although it often feels like more because Day made several similar movies all of with quite similar handsome stars. Their first movie together was “Pillow Talk” with saw Day playing Jan Morrow who shares a party phone line with Brad Allen (Rock Hudson) much to her annoyance as he hogs the line with calls to and from various women. But when Allen finds himself in the company of Morrow he has a bit of fun pretending to be an out of town Texan called Rex Stetson, except what started as a bit of fun turns into more when they genuinely fall for each other.

As already mentioned Doris Day made several similar movies and here again we see her being duped by a man pretending to be someone else. It is the best version of this type of storyline thanks to the amazing chemistry between Doris Day and Rock Hudson making it extremely funny and quite romantic, which in an ironic way is quite funny thanks to certain revelations about both of the stars. And despite the concept of Day being duped by another man had already been done it is the one most people remember with Day delivering her kooky, face pulling comedy to the max whilst Hudson charms his way through every scene.

#1 Calamity Jane (1953)

And finally my number 1 Doris Day movie in my list of “Top 10 Doris Day Movies” and it has to be the award winning “Calamity Jane”. In “Calamity Jane” Doris Day stars as Jane a feisty Indian tracker in the town of Deadwood who likes to boast a little too much. When the owner of the local saloon is desperate to get someone to perform, Jane boasts she can bring back acclaimed stage performer Adelaid Adams from Chicago to perform on their small stage. But having headed off to Chicago Jane mistakes Adelaid’s maid Kate for the big star and returns with her instead. Well it all comes out that Jane didn’t bring back Adelaid but her and Kate become friends leaving to a bit of unexpected rivalry in the romantic department.

From the opening scene with the lively “The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away)” right through to the credits “Calamity Jane” is an out and out classic musical full of big musical song and dance numbers which makes the storyline almost unimportant despite not being that bad. But why “Calamity Jane” is my number 1 movie is because it showcases everyone of Doris Day’s wonderful talents from dancing, singing, comedy as well as a touch of drama and alongside solid performances from Howard Keel, Allyn Ann McLerie and Philip Carey there is not a single dull moment in it’s entire length.

The Great Films of Christmas

Posted by biohubieran on 28 августа 2010

There are many a Christmas film to entertain during this most special time of year and in spite of this tradition not going back as far as the music and stories that accompany this season; it has become just as much apart of Christmas as any other. Christmas films; now a days are just as eagerly awaited as perhaps the season itself by cinema goers all over the world with every season bringing on a new batch, most of which will probably be forgotten before the season returns the following year.

With regards to the history behind these films perhaps it can be said that the first films of this season limited themselves to subjects which portrayed the birth and life of Jesus Christ or at least the way it is said to have taken place in the “New Testament” of the bible. These films concentrating on showing three wise men being lead by a star to a place where the virgin Mary gave birth to the one whom Christians through out the world have called the messiah. Some films would include the events of Jesus’ life but for the most part these films of Christmas would limit themselves to the events that preceded his birth.

With time however Christmas films as did perhaps the season itself; moved away from only being focused on the birth of Christ and started including such themes as Santa Claus. This being the man who supposedly lives in the North Pole and gives presents to all those children, regardless of any condition other then weather or not they have been good through out the year.

Christmas eventually stretched beyond even these two themes and like Christmas itself which expanded so did the films concerning this time of year, to include the effect this season has on most people and their relationships to one another. As a strange coincidence or perhaps it was not the first film to go a way from these two themes was “A Christmas Carol”, based on the famous book written by Charles Dickens. As it might have been this story which was the first to concentrate on another matter concerning Christmas other then Jesus or Santa Claus.

With regards however to film versions of “A Christmas Carol”, the first of which was not even given this title but “Scrooge” (though sometimes also referred to as “Marley’s ghost”), it being released way back in 1901 as a short film. Many films however would follow based on the theme created by Dickens though perhaps the one that sticks out the most from all these versions of the same, at least as far as those which are in black and white is the one staring Reginald Owen in 1938 in the role of the Ebenezer Scrooge. The biter old man who needed to be reminded by three ghosts sent to him by his deceased business partner, Marley of the joy he once held for Christmas which had been replaced by his greed for money.

Where “A Christmas Carol” can be said to have been the first film to focus on other then religious subjects perhaps it is the film “It’s A Wonderful Life” which in a way goes back to them though again not concentrating on Jesus’ birth but on an angel coming down to earth to assist “George Bailey”. This being a man who on Christmas day decided that his path would be suicide to escape from a life he considered not to have been of use to any; only to be proven that in fact many around him would be far worse of if he had not been born.

“It’s A Wonderful Life” in my opinion and that of many (at least in the United States) others has in recent years replaced “A Christmas Carol” as far as being the most symbolic film of the Christmas season. As it perhaps even more so then “A Christmas Carol” captures that spirit so abundant during this season. That being the spirit of giving and sharing with our neighbors specially should they be in need or if they through out their lives have done as much as George Bailey did for those in his town of Bedford Falls. As for myself personally I would have to say that looking at this film even from a critical angle, that it is the one that I would recommend above all others when it comes to Christmas films. It combining sentimentalism but in a strange manner those who are portrayed as such are also shown as being practical. After all they in a way are simply showing their gratitude to the man who was responsible for them being able to buy the homes they live in. This sentiment being exclaimed in the line “I wouldn’t even have a roof over my head it if wasn’t for you George” used by one of the characters who contributes to solve George’s dilemma over the money which had been stolen from his savings and loan.

Perhaps one of the reasons why “It’s A Wonderful Life” has replaced “A Christmas Carol” as the standard Christmas film is because “It’s A Wonderful Life” contrary to “A Christmas Carol” has not had so many different versions made, which makes it that when people refer to it they naturally only think of the one made by Capra staring James Stewart. This being the case though a very forgettable version called “It happened One Christmas” was made in 1977 which given the fact that many were not familiar with the original version at the time become very popular. This till “It’s A Wonderful Life” was made popular on TV to the point of almost being shown at least once a day at Christmas time. All of which sending “It happened One Christmas” back to the obscurity from which it should have never left.

“A Christmas Carol” however has had many versions made of it, making it almost that there is no version which can be considered classic or even the original one. All of which making it hard for film viewers to focus on any one particular version or associating the main character “Ebenezer Scrooge” with any particular actor, given that many from George C. Scot to Henry Winkler (mostly known for his portrayal of the “Happy Days” character the “Fonz”) to Reginald Owen have played have played it. This not being the case for George Bailey; as this character has come to be associated exclusively with James Stewart.

“A Christmas Carol” perhaps because it was first known as a great piece of literature went on however to have its theme repeated not only in many a film but TV serials as well. For instance “The Odd Couple” did so when Oscar dreamed he was “Scrooge” being visited by the ghost of Felix; given that the ghost of Marley could not make it given that it was his busiest time of year. “The Six Million Dollar Man”, a TV show about a man turned part robot also took from this theme as did many a cartoon like “Mr. Magoo” and even Walt Disney cashed in on the idea using Donald Duck’s rich but often parsimonious Scottish uncle.

However, many are the films regarding Christmas that I would say deserve honorable mention such as “The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t”, which I might add I went to see with my class while a student at the parochial school I attended in my early years in New York City. “The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t” I would recommend as being nice though it perhaps lacks somewhat in originality as it takes a page from “It’s A Wonderful Life”. This coming in the form that it is the children who help Santa raise the money he needs to pay off his debt or the toys he has worked on all year will be taken instead.

However when mentioning Christmas films there are some which I would not take even the most rotten kids I know to see such as the one made with Dudley Moore called “Santa Claus” or “Miracle On 34th Street”. This last film being in extremely poor taste in my opinion; as it tries to show the hardships of a “poor little girl” who cries because she has to content herself with living in luxurious apartment on Westside of Central Park; given her mother does not own an equally posh house in the country. This “poor girl’s” tragedy is even augmented because she has no father, as if her more then loving mother were not enough. This making me think of how one could classify those orphaned children I saw living on the streets of South America, who had to do with much less then this spoilt American child; while not having anybody what so ever.

Of course there are other films which were made and can be purchased on DVD such as “The Bells Of Saint Marry” though this film I know very little about as I have neither seen it nor read its synopsis and what little I do know about it is that there is a Swedish actress by the name of Ingrid Bergman, who plays a nun. This being what I picked up from a scene in “The Godfather” in which Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino) and his girlfriend, Kate (Played by Diane Keaton) walk out of Radio City (when they showed films there) after seeing it and comment on how perhaps Michael would prefer it if Kate were a nun or Ingrid Bergman. I having little in the way of knowledge about this film can not recommend it though I have heard from many that it is worth seeing but then again this was what I heard about that tactless film “Miracle On 34th Street”.

As for animated films that have taken my interest during this time of year, I would have to say that “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” ranks up there as one of the finest films I have seen connected to this time of year. This 30 minute animated film by “Doctor Zeus” showing how a little girl teaches the mean Grinch, that there is more to Christmas then toys and decorations; is a real Christmas classic which no child should ever miss. Those who see this film in English and are old enough might recognize the voice of Boris Karloff (real name William Pratt), also known for his portrayal of Frankenstein. Where I recommend this animated film I by no means do so the idiotic film version made in recent years with the same title by director Ron Howard (also known for his portrayal of the Happy Days character Ritchie Cunningham) staring Jim Carey. This because I have a hard time deciding if this film is even a bigger tragedy then some of the other Christmas disasters I have tried to watch on TV; most of which I will not even mention in this article.

TV shows have also contributed great stories for this time of year known as Christmas and it is with all my heart that I would like to recommend to those who should read this article, that this Christmas they turn on Youtube and watch the episode of the Twilight Zone; entitled “Night Of The Meek”. This being a truly igneous story of a man of good nature by the name of Henry Corwin; who through the magic that is Christmas is literally transformed in to Santa Claus but not before having been fired from his Job as the department store Santa Clause for drunkenness.

It is this story which I would say is my favorite as far as stories portraying the character who is also known as Saint Nick. As it portrays Henry Corwin as a generous man, who drinks because he is unable to help the poor and helpless one’s as he refers to them who are all around him. One of which contrary to the child in “Miracle On 34th Street” asks not for a house in the country but a job for his unemployed father. It is however when confronted by a bag of Christmas presents which seems to not only never run out of presents but have in it all that those around ask for; such as toys, sweaters and just about anything anybody could want that Henry Corwin gets what he always wanted. To become the biggest gift giver of all.

In conclusion I would say that Christmas is a wonderful time of year and perhaps in a way it is made more so by the films mentioned in this article; for they thanks to their stories show us how this time of year can truly bring people closer together in a way that nothing else can. As for a personal confession of mine, I must say that “It’s A Wonderful Life” along with “The Night Of Meek” never fail to bring tears to my eyes. This being the case regardless of weather I find myself watching or even describing their plots as I have done so in this piece of mine.

My name is Gianni Truvianni, I am an author who writes with the simple aim of sharing his ideas, thoughts and so much more of what I am with those who are interested in perhaps reading something new. As for the details regarding my life I would say that there is nothing that lifts them above the ordinary. I was born in New York City in 1967 on May 21st and am presently living in Warsaw, Poland where I wrote my first book “New York’s Opera Society” now Available on Amazon.

Consider Online Backup Services

Posted by biohubieran on 23 августа 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Having a local back to your external and/or optical drivers is becoming more and more popular in the technological world. Nonetheless, it is not a magic wall, and is not always completely guaranteed to protect your data. Then again, nothing is completely safe from intruders in the large online world, but most companies offering online back up services do their best to ensure satisfaction. Close to a year ago, the director of a large company had his computers and backup device stolen. On the back up device was more than a decades worth of information, including articles, family photographs, and financial information. In a more extreme scenario, a natural disaster could completely whip out your PC, and there goes all your personal information, photos, and other precious media. A practice some people use to back up their most important files is to use an external hard drive. They load the external hard drive with their most important data and such, and have the hard drive put in a safe. Obviously, this is a lot of trouble to go through, and updating the hard drive would be a hassle. You would have to take it out of the safe, and if the same is not at your residence, this is even more of a hassle. The best, most effective way to keep a back up of all your important information and data is with an online backup service through a specialized company. Many large companies are turning to these online backup companies to “guard” their most valuable information and data.

Online back up services are not expensive at all, and prices start as low as a couple dollars a month. As you require more room to store data, the price will increase. The online back up companies are advanced enough to ensure that your PC or Internet will not be slowed down at all. The only part that may slow down your PC and connection performance is when your data is being uploaded. This is not uncommon, and you will experience this with any online back up company. You data will be encrypted completely prior to being sent, when it is being sent, and after is sent by some of the most powerful servers around. Most companies offering this service work on a “cycle system” in which your files will automatically be uploaded when there is room available on the uploading servers.

Though there are many online back up services from different companies, and all of them keep your data safely in a remote server, each company has certain differences. Some companies are much easier to setup, while some make the process of choosing which data you would like to back up much easier. Some companies specialize in retrieving files if they are lost. There are companies that give good service all around for those three factors though, and these companies are widely used by large corporations. If you have important data on your PC, do not assume it is safe. Look into an online back up company, because without one, your data is at risk.

Review of the Tori Amos CD From The Choirgirl Hotel

Posted by biohubieran on 18 августа 2010

I can describe the latest release from Rock sensation Tori Amos for you with just one word… Outstanding!

It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with each song standing tall on it’s own.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you’ve got one of Tori Amos’s most impressive releases ever.

I’m of the opinion that From The Choirgirl Hotel is certainly Tori Amos’s best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it’s a collection that even the casual Rock fan can appreciate and enjoy.

While this entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 7 - Liquid Diamonds, track 11 - Playboy Mommy, and track 12 - Pandora’s Aquarium

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Spark. What a nice track!

Free Home Energy - Do You Need a Commercial System Or Can You DIY?

Posted by biohubieran on 16 августа 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With the ever rising cost of power to the home, many people have been looking at harnessing the free energy which is all round us. But do you need to buy a commercial ready-made system or is it possible to build your own?

For the average home, the cost of heating is outstripping the average wage increase and many consumers are looking to do something about it. Very few homes lend themselves easily to the use of wind energy or solar energy because they were built long before such ideas became a reality. Even now, new homes are still not being designed to take advantage of free energy sources. The new-build industry hasn’t yet woken up to the increasing awareness and demand of the knowledgeable homeowner.

You can go out and buy a commercial energy system and have it adapted to fit your house. However, this can be prohibitively expensive and out of reach for the average homeowner. While the system will start to make savings as soon as it is installed, the return on the investment can be over 10 or 15 years. So the next person to own the home will get the main benefit rather than you!

A viable alternative is to install the free energy system yourself. If you can do almost any type of DIY competently, then you are well qualified to install your own system. The components, in terms of wind turbines and solar panels, are becoming increasingly available and affordable all the time. The technologies associated with these devices is improving rapidly to the point at which every home can afford to generate its own electricity.

The big electricity generating companies are a bit slow at promoting the viability of this technology. It is easy to see why, they have a vested interest in selling you electricity that they have generated.

So the components are readily available. What about the design and construction knowledge? There are many people who offer step-by-step instructions to set up your own energy generator. These are now extremely good and valuable sources of hints and tips to make the installation a success. They even tell you how to sell your electricity to the big electricity companies.

I know of many people who have taken the plunge using these instruction packs and are now reaping the benefits of free home energy. The return on their investment is usually in the range of 2 to 3 years. So I would go for a DIY system every time.

Al Stewart is a researcher of technology and has reviewed a number of free energy guides.
